
Natural cooling technology refers to the use of natural cooling sources to stop or reduce the capacity operation of chillers or other mechanical refrigeration systems, thus achieving the purpose of reducing energy consumption. The water-water plate heat exchanger and some pipelines and equipment are added to the conventional air-conditioning water system. Chilled water is exchanged using a circulating system consisting of a cooling tower + cooling water pump + plate heat exchanger to reduce the temperature of the machine room. The plate heat exchanger and the chiller are connected in parallel and both are equipped with independent cooling and chilled water pumps.
After the cooling water and chilled water are heat exchanged in the plate heat exchanger, if the chilled water supply temperature can meet the requirements, the chiller is switched off and the plate is switched on to achieve natural cooling; if the cooling water temperature cannot reduce the chilled water return temperature to the required water supply temperature, the plate is switched off and the chiller is switched to the direct supply cooling mode.
Natural cooling of cooling towers is one of the most used natural cooling technologies in data centres today. Natural cooling of cooling towers includes:
① Direct natural cooling of open cooling towers, where the chilled water produced by the cooling tower is directly used for precision air conditioning in the server room;
② Indirect natural cooling of open cooling towers, where the cold water produced by the cooling towers is used for heat exchange with the high temperature return water of the precision air-conditioning in the server room through plate heat exchangers to achieve cooling to the server room;
③ Closed cooling tower natural cooling, using a closed cooling tower to produce low temperature water or low temperature glycol solution directly for use by the precision air conditioner in the server room;
④ Dry cooler natural cooling, dry cooler is a tube heat exchanger placed in the tower, through the external circulation of low temperature cold air cooling tube from the machine room precision air conditioning of circulating water or glycol solution.
Open cooling tower direct natural cooling method of circulating cold water is susceptible to pollution caused by the decline in water quality, which in turn affects the heat exchanger performance and operational reliability of the room precision air conditioning heat exchanger, so in practice the use of this method of natural cooling data centre is rare. The indirect natural cooling method of open cooling towers is one of the more popular forms used in data centres, where indirect water-water heat exchange is achieved through plate heat exchangers. Due to the high cooling efficiency of open cooling towers, this type of natural cooling method has a high overall natural cooling source utilisation rate and is commonly used, but in severe cold and cold regions, the freeze protection of open cooling towers is very critical and should be given attention.
