The common issues that plate heat exchangers may encounter include:
Leakage of medium: This includes two forms, seepage and leakage. Seepage is characterized by a small amount of medium that is not continuous, while leakage involves a larger amount of medium that is continuous. Leakage mainly occurs at the sealing areas between plates, the end parts of the plates with the press plate inside, and the corrugated grooves of the plates.
Large pressure difference between inlet and outlet of the medium: If the outlet pressure of the medium is too low, it can cause a pressure drop that exceeds the design requirements, directly affecting the heat exchange effect of the system and not meeting the flow and temperature requirements of the system, which in turn affects the heating or cooling effect of the medium.
Mixing of media: The medium with higher pressure mixes with the medium with lower pressure, leading to abnormal temperature and pressure. If the medium is corrosive, it can also cause corrosion to other equipment in the system. This situation usually occurs in the secondary sealing area or the guiding area.
Ineffective cooling: The main feature is that the outlet temperature of the cooled medium is too high and does not meet the design requirements, affecting the heat exchange efficiency.
Corrosion penetration or cracks in the heat exchange plates: This can lead to leakage problems in the heat exchanger.
Plate heat exchangers should not be used in environments that are dirty, messy, or have severe scaling: This can affect the efficiency and service life of the heat exchanger.
Working pressure issues: Plate heat exchangers are sealed with gaskets, and the working pressure generally should not exceed 2.5MPa. The medium temperature should be below 250°C, otherwise, leakages may occur.
Easy clogging problem: Due to the narrow channels between the plates, when the heat exchange medium contains larger particles or fibrous materials, it is prone to clogging the channels between the plates.
These issues may need to be resolved or avoided through regular inspection, maintenance, and proper operation.
